An academic program focused on indoor environmental science and engineering does not exist elsewhere in the United States and is greatly needed. This interdisciplinary program will prepare a pioneering generation of leaders in the indoor environmental field. Due to the emerging nature of this field it will be possible to educate and integrate both women and historically underrepresented minorities into leadership roles from the outset. The program will establish The University of Texas (UT) as a national academic leader in the field, and will strengthen ties between faculty and students in six colleges at UT. It will allow IGERT trainees and faculty to establish strong research and educational ties with four nationally recognized institutions. Lastly, but importantly, it will lead to improvements in the design of indoor environments and subsequent reductions in public exposure to indoor air pollution.
