Students should emphasize elective courses in transportation engineering. It would also be valuable to include mathematics, programming, economics, optimization, and statistics courses.
A Master’s degree will be required in many technical areas for advancement; for some it will be a prerequisite for an entry level position. Professional registration is always a good idea, and is particularly critical for design-related positions.
