Advising and Registration

Prior to registration each semester, current undergraduate students, such as Nhat Ho (left), participate in course selection advising and receive assistance from faculty and staff, in this case staff members Joanne Belsley (center) and Molly Gully (right). Course selection advising is set up in the University Co-op CAEE Student Lounge to be better available to students from 8-5 for a full week.

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering (CAEE) at The University of Texas at Austin (UT) provides broad and flexible programs of study. Undergraduate students have flexibility in course selection and should take an active role in choosing the courses they take.

Faculty and staff are critical to helping students make short-term academic goals each semester. Faculty and staff also are critical to students developing an academic strategy to meet longer-term career goals at the beginning of their academic careers. This page relates to both selecting courses and career mentoring.

Course Selection

Prior to registration each semester, current undergraduate students must participate in course selection advising. This advising usually occurs both in April for the summer and fall semesters and in October for the spring semester. The specific advising and registration dates are posted below, and information is distributed through email. Students choose which faculty to see from those available on the linked Advising Schedule.

It may help you to know that faculty and staff both have a role in advising students during course selection advising each semester. Throughout the year, one faculty member, the Undergraduate Advisor, serves as a primary contact for students, and two staff members also provide academic advising:

Faculty/Student Mentoring Program

A new student mentoring program has begun in the CAEE department. In this program, all new freshmen and transfer students are assigned a faculty mentor, and each student will see this mentor once per year during their first two years. The purpose of this program is to ensure that new students have a faculty contact with whom they can discuss issues affecting their overall career plans. Such issues may include planning for graduate school and discussing the features of the curriculum that lead to certain engineering specializations. Students and faculty are emailed information regarding precedures and deadlines.
