I have chosen a governmental career path with a position at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Cincinnati, Ohio. I work within the Office of Research and Development (ORD) in the Water Supply and Water Resources Division as an environmental engineer. The engineers and scientists in ORD conduct research on ways to prevent pollution, protect human health, and reduce risk. My research group specializes in treatment technology evaluation to remove chemical and microbiological contaminants from drinking water sources, assuring the delivery of safe drinking water. My current research areas include the role of biofilms in distribution system nitrification and the concentration of natural organic matter to facilitate reproducible results in disinfection byproduct research. The EWRE classes in treatment process engineering combined with my research in membranes and microbiology prepared me well for my career. Even today, relationships with EWRE faculty and former students provide ample opportunity to collaborate on all sorts of interesting research projects.

I am working as a consulting engineer in the Walnut Creek, California, office of a consulting firm, doing both environmental and civil work. The majority of the projects that I have worked on involve the design and construction of drinking water treatment and distribution facilities, and I have also taken on various smaller tasks ranging from storm drain design to surveying. Courses in EWRE have prepared me well for my work, especially conceptual process designs, and the weekly seminars have allowed me to be conversant with technical areas not related to my thesis research. I have also seized every opportunity to work on bench-scale testing projects, attempting to relive those glorious carefree graduate student days. But of course, nothing can ever replace those good times I spent with my Kirisits Lab labmates.
