Interests
Dr. Sorber began his professional career with the U.S. Army, serving in a number of positions in Europe, with the U.S. Army Environmental Hygiene Agency, and with the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command.

He joined The University of Texas System in l975. He served in a number of academic, research, and administrative positions at The University of Texas at San Antonio, and as Associate Dean, College of Engineering of The University of Texas at Austin, a position he held from l980 to l986. In l986, he was appointed Dean of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Sorber returned to The University of Texas System in l993, when he was appointed as the fourth president of The University of Texas of the Permian Basin. He returned to The University of Texas at Austin to assume teaching and research responsibilities in 2001. Subsequently, he served as Interim President of The University of Texas at Arlington in most of 2003 and early 2004.

Dr. Sorber has been active in a wide range of professional activities. He has served as Chair or member of committees for AAEE, ASCE, ASTM, AWWA, NSPE, WEF, the National Research Council, the Stockholm Water Symposium, and the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges. He was named a Fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1991. He has served on several USEPA advisory committees and Peer Review Panels. During l992-93, Dr. Sorber served as President of the Water Environment Federation.

Dr. Sorber is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers. He is a member of a number of honorary societies and has received a number of awards for his teaching and professional service, including the Gordon Maskew Fair Award of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers. More recently, he was named Outstanding Engineering Alumnus of The Pennsylvania State University and Distinguished Graduate of the College of Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Sorber has authored or co-authored more than 130 papers and reports in the areas of land application of wastewater and sludges, water and wastewater reuse, water and wastewater disinfection and higher education.
