Using Email in the LRC: Eudora

Setting Up Eudora in the LRC

To retrieve your email from a PC in the LRC follow the instructions below.

NOTE-After you have completed these steps, you MUST start Eudora from the shortcut you created — NOT from the Start menu on the local hard drive.

Step 1

Create a directory in your home directory on CIVIL5\STU which will contain your email. Name it anything you like; in this example MyMail.

Step 2

Open up the Eudora directory located on your local hard drive at C:\Eudora. Locate the file EUDORA.INI and select it by clicking on it one time with the right mouse button and selecting COPY.

You may have to go open My Computer on the desktop then go to 'Folder Options" under the "Tools" menu and uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" box under the View tab so you can see the .INI extension. You can also look at the properties of the file and it should be - Type of file: Configuration Settings.

Step 3

Go to the directory you created, right-click on the directory, and select PASTE in order to paste a copy of the EUDORA.INI file in your mail directory.

While you are there, click on the FILE Menu and select NEW, then from the cascaded menu select FOLDER. When the new folder appears, name it ATTACH. This will be the location where all of your mail message attachments will be stored.

Step 4

Return to the C:\EUDORA directory and create a shortcut of the Eudora application. To create a shortcut, copy Eudora.exe by right-clicking and selecting COPY. Go back to your mail folder. Open the folder and, while right-clicking within the folder, select "paste shortcut."

Step 5

After pasting the shortcut, click the right mouse button on the shortcut icon and from the context menu select PROPERTIES. This will open the PROPERTIES window of that shortcut. Once the window is opened, click on the second tab at the top labeled SHORTCUT.

At the SHORTCUT window, you should see an entry field near the top called TARGET. Initially this field will have the location of where the Eudora executable application has been installed, C:\EUDORA\EUDORA.EXE. All you have to do at this point is click once with the left mouse button in that field at the end of the line and add the additional location of your mail folder. Don't forget the double quotes.

You should also enter this same folder location in the START IN field.

This will cause the EUDORA.EXE file that is called from this shortcut to look in the Z:\yourdir\yourmail directory for its initialization file, EUDORA.INI, specific to you.

Step 6

Once each mailbox and shortcut have been created, the Eudora Pro application must be configured individually. This means launching the application with the shortcut and clicking on the TOOLS command in the menu and then selecting OPTIONS to configure a complete setup for your personal account (i.e. Username, Password, POP Server, etc.)

Click the Getting Started icon. Enter your email account name under Login Name.

Under Mail Server and SMTP Server, enter the name of the servers that you will use to receive and send your email. In most cases this will be mail.utexas.edu.

Step 7

Two very important settings not to be overlooked are the PASSWORD and ATTACHMENTS options.

PASSWORD

In the CHECKING MAIL category of the OPTIONS window, don't forget to uncheck the SAVE PASSWORD box . This causes each person to be forced to enter their password every time they check for mail or when launching Eudora Pro if the IMMEDIATE SEND box is selected in the SENDING MAIL category.

Step 8

ATTACHMENTS

If you recall, you created an ATTACH folder in the your email directory. While setting up your mailbox, point your default attachment folder to the correct location by clicking on the box under Attachment directory: and browsing to your Stu directory.

When an attachment comes to you via e-mail, it is automatically saved to your particular attachment folder for later retrieval.

You are now ready to check your email by double-clicking the Eudora shortcut in your home directory. Do not start eudora from the Start Menu.
