Who is able to use the lab?

The LRC is open to all Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering students, faculty, and staff, as well as students currently enrolled in a CAEE course. All students are required to have a User Account to logon to lab computers. Your UTID will be required for lab use and to check out user manuals.

How do I get a User Account?

To receive an LRC User Account, fill out the application form on our web site. After your application is submitted you will receive, via email within a couple of hours, a username and password which will give you access to lab computers and to our centralized file server CIVIL. A home directory will automatically be created for you on CIVIL\STU\first letter of username\username. Your username is created from your UT EID.

Can I access the lab after hours?

Authorized access card holders will be allowed inside the lab area after normal operating hours. Only graduate and undergraduate students in CAEE and those who work at least 20 hours/week for the Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Department are eligible to obtain an access card. Those interested in applying must complete an application form available at the output site. Non-card holders will NOT be required to exit the lab at the end of normal operating hours but will not be able to come back in once they exit the lab.

Can I get Email in the Lab?

You can send and receive email by connecting to your email server from any PC using the mail client MS Outlook. If you don't have an email account, we recommend opening one using The University Mailbox Service (UMBS). Instructions are available for creating and accessing your account. Additional information is also available at http://www.utexas.edu/its/umbs/index.html.

What hardware is available in the Lab?

PC: Over 100 Pentium class workstations ranging from 1 Ghz - 3.6 Ghz, 2 GB RAM, 73 or 36 GB drives, and 17" - 19" flat screen displays.

5 Pentium 4 3.4 Ghz "multimedia" PCs with a color scanner, and DVD burner, all running Windows XP Professional.

UNIX: 2 Compaq Unix workstations and 1 Suse Linux quad-cpu workstation.

Other special equipment available includes CD ROM and DVD burners, Zip drives, laser printers, color plotter, color printer, laser pointers, checkout laptops, and LCD projectors.

What software is available in the Lab?

Microsoft Office 2007, Microstation XM, AutoCAD 2008, FrontPage, WS_FTP, Internet Explorer, various compilers, and Internet clients are just a few of the applications installed on lab machines. A complete listing of LRC software is available.

How can I print?

Laser and inkjet printing based on a quota system is available from all LRC platforms for both 8.5 x 11 and 11 x 14 formats.

How do I log in and access the centralized file server?

All student and class directories reside on our centralized server, CIVIL, which is a Windows 2003 server. Because Windows 2000 is a security-oriented operating system, each student must have an assigned username and password to logon to lab machines and access the server.

The "STU" directory on CIVIL contains all student home directories for file storage, the "LRC" directory also on CIVIL contains "CLASS" for shared class files and "Scratch.tmp" for transferring and temporarily storing your files. Note: Scratch.tmp may be purged any morning at 7:30 AM.

PC - After pressing Control, Alt and Delete simultaneously, type in your username and password, and LRC as the domain. Your machine will automatically map the drive Z to CIVIL\STU when you log on.

Can I publish on the web?

Students can publish their website on Webspace. Webspace is file storage system provided by Information Technology Services (ITS) to all UT students, faculty, and staff at no additional cost. The system provides 75 MB of disk space that allows you to store copies of important documents. In addition to storing private files, you may also use this space to publish a personal home page.

Can I access my student directory from home?

Student directories are accessible remotely by connecting to civil.ce.utexas.edu via FTP. The University's Telesys dial-up service is available to all UT students who have opened an IF account validated for Telesys. You can apply for your IF account electronically. Detailed FTP instructions will help you connect to our server.

HELP!

The Civil Engineering Technology Support and Services web pages should be your first resource; review the list of help topics available for Students, Faculty, and Staff. Manuals are also available for 2 hours checkout for supported software. After you have consulted these two sources, the Proctors will be happy to assist you.
