Overview

Card access control is a technique used to control the passage of authorized individuals "into" and/or "out of" a designated area. Authorized access into a controlled area can be allowed by an electric lock designed to bypass (or activate) the alarm system which signals the police of unauthorized use.

The card is coded to grant entry or exit through access control doors during a specific time. With your VDL Access Card, you will be able to enter and exit the VDL either through the 5.406 or 5.408 doors.

Each use by the card holder creates a historical record, and a message is sent to the computer. The message includes: individual card ID, time, and whether the individual was entering or exiting the VDL. The computer then matches this data with the authorization data and decides if that card is valid. If each criterion is satisfied, the card holder is allowed entry. If not, entry is denied and the police receive a message that an entry was attempted with an invalid card. The historical record created by the card usage can be examined later if a security question arises concerning activity in the protected area.

The access control cards used by the University of Texas at Austin are issued and controlled by the Civil, Architectural and Environment Engineering Department.

Getting your card

Ask an LRC Proctor for an Application Form or PRINT one off the web (must have Acrobat Reader).

1. Go to the UT ID Center at the Flawn Academic Center and switch out your curent UT ID with a new proximity UT ID. There is no charge unless you don't turn in your old card.
2. Fill out the top portion of the request form in ink. You must have an email address. Form must be signed by your ARE course instructor.
3. Take the filled out form to Barbara Yates, ECJ 4.7. Your new proximity UT ID will be activated within 24 hours.

Using your card

1. Simply wave your proximity UT ID in front of the card reader located right outside the VDL, ECJ 5.408.
2. Proper validation will cause the red light to flicker momentarily and then turn green.
3. Computer verification may take up to five seconds.
4. A continuous green light is an indication that the door is unlocked.
   Warning: You now have only 10 seconds to enter or exit and close the door before an alarm will sound.
5. After a pre-determined time, the grenn light will go back to red and the door will lock.

NOTE: You do not need a valid proximity UT ID to exit the lab. Simply turn the door handle in 5.408 or push the crash bars in 5.406 and the door will unlock.

Student responsibility

Obtaining and using an Access Control Card for the Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Virtual Design Lab is a privilege and a responsibility. It allows access to the lab during unstaffed hours. Along with this privilege comes the responsibility to obey the Lab rules and to help maintain the Lab as a clean, safe, and secure working environment.

By receiving an Access Control Card the student agrees to:

1. Obey the rules and regulations of the Virtual Design Lab. Failure to do so could result in loss of lab privileges, both during staffed and unstaffed hours.
2. Keep the Access Control Card for personal use. Do not lend the card to others or provide lab access to others without specific written permission from the Learning Resource Center manager.
3. Protect the card as a valuable item. It allows access to the lab you want to use.
4. If a card is lost or stolen, report it immediately to Danny Quiroz. Any unauthorized use of the card is your responsibility and can affect your lab privileges.
5. Your card will be valid until the end of the semester that you filled in on your request form. Without renewal, the card will be disactivated.
6. No food or drink is allowed in the lab. It is a hazard to the equipment and detracts from the study environment desired for the lab.
7. Software piracy and pornographic materials will not be tolerated; and the destruction (erasing or modification) of system software will be considered vandalism which will be dealt with appropriately.

Lost or stolen cards

Lost or stolen cards should be reported immediately to Danny Quiroz to invalidate the card. Invalidation of the card can be immediate and does not depend upon recovery of the card. There will be a $10.00 replacement charge for the card.

Turning in your card

Your card will automatically be deactivated at the end of the semester.
