Professor Robert Gilbert recently received an ASCE OTC Hall of Fame award. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) initiated the hall of fame to honor the extraordinary papers which form the core of current practice throughout the world.

Six outstanding papers were honored at the annual Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston, TX in May 2014.

Gilbert and W.H. Tang received recognition for their paper “Case Study of Offshore Pile System Reliability” that was written in 1993, while Gilbert was a PhD student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Their paper presented the results of a research effort to evaluate the reliability of offshore pile foundation systems. It is an extension of previous work dealing with the reliability of individual piles under axial and lateral loading. The results of this research provided valuable insight into the reliability achieved with design procedures and the factors which affect the performance of the foundation system.

Founded in 1969, the Offshore Technology Conference is the world’s foremost event for the development of offshore resources in the fields of drilling, exploration, production, and environmental protection.
