Dr. Wassim
M. Ghannoum obtained his Bachelor and Master degrees in civil engineering
with emphasis on structural engineering at McGill University in Montreal,
Canada. Dr. Ghannoum completed a research oriented master's degree focusing on the shear behavior of concrete
members. After completing his master's degree,
Dr. Ghannoum worked as a structural design engineer for three years before
pursuing his PhD degree in structural engineering at the University of
California, Berkeley. He completed his PhD degree in 2007, focusing his
research on the assessment of the collapse vulnerability of older non-ductile
reinforced concrete buildings during earthquakes. Following the completion of
his PhD degree, Dr. Ghannoum took a position as an Assistant Professor at the
University of Texas at Austin. Dr.
Ghannoum conducts research aimed at extending the life-span and increasing
the resilience to damage of concrete structures through the application of
novel structural materials and retrofit techniques. His expertise has been sought by
the United Nations Development Programme, the
National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the US Federal Emergency
Management Program, among others. He received the Concrete Reinforcing Steel
Institute's Research Fellowship in 2013 for his work
introducing high-strength steel materials in reinforced concrete structures.
Currently, Dr. Ghannoum serves as chair of the American Concrete Institute's (ACI) committee 369 entitled ''Seismic Repair and Rehabilitation'', responsible for maintaining and updating the concrete
provisions of the world-renowned ASCE/SEI 41 Standard ''Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Structures''. Dr. Ghannoum is an invited member of the ACI committee
318-R tasked with introducing high-strength steel reinforcement into the ACI
318 design standard. Dr. Ghannoum is a licensed professional engineer in
the state of Texas and a Fellow of the Structural Engineering Institute of
the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE/SEI). |
