NON-NUCLEAR METHODS FOR COMPACTION CONTROL

GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANTS: Ashley Adams (graduated 2004), Manal Salem, Ruth Tobin
COLLABORATORS: K. Stokoe (Co-PI) and S. Wright (Co-PI)

FUNDED BY: Texas Department of Transportation

DESCRIPTION
This TxDOT-sponsored project involves evaluation of several new technologies for rapidly assessing the compactness of compacted embankment fill and mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall select fill. The parameters measured by the new technologies will be compared with direct measurements of density and water content. These comparisons will be performed on a range of soil types (well-graded sand, low PI clay, and high PI clay) compacted at a range of densities and water contents. A companion laboratory investigation will be conducted to measure capillary stresses and their effect on the measurements from the various compaction control devices for soil.
