2011

·         January   – Shukui Liu joined NDT lab.

o   Shukui is a visiting Ph.D. student from Xi’an Polytechnic University, China. He is supported by China Scholarship Council to study at UT for two years. Welcome! 

·         March   – Eric Giannini accepted an assistant professor position offer from University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. Congratulations!

o   Eric is co-advised by Drs. Folliard and Zhu.

·         March 19   Xiaowei Dai won ACI-James Instruments Award!

o   Xiaowei Dai won the ACI-James Instruments Student Award for his paper entitled: "Use of parabolic reflectors in air-coupled impact-echo test".  Congratulations to Xaiowei!

o   Seong-Hoon Kee received this award in 2011. NDT group students have received this award two years in a row. Can we make it three years in a row?

·         March 27-29   – Dr. Zhu visited University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Northwestern University – a homecoming trip.

o   Dr. Zhu gave a seminar to construction material group students and faculty at UIUC “Piezoeletric sensors for concrete NDT and health monitoring”.

o    Dr. Zhu gave a seminar at Northwestern University “Air-coupled sensing for nondestructive testing of concrete”.

2011

·         January 15-16  Dr. Zhu visited Tongji University.

o   Dr. Zhu attended the 2nd Conference on Structural Testing, Inspection and Education in Shanghai.  Audience showed strong interests in her presentation on air-coupled sensing. 

·         January – Paper accepted by ACI Materials Journal.

o   Kee, S.H., Fernández-Gómez, E.,  Zhu, J., “Evaluation of Surface-Breaking Cracks in Concrete Using Air-Coupled Sensors,” Submitted to ACI Materials Journal in Oct., 2010.

·         February – Kee wins ACI-James Instruments Award!

o   Seong-Hoon Kee won the ACI-James Instruments Student Award for his paper entitled: "Low Cost Piezoceramic Sensors for Health Monitoring of Concrete Structures".  He will receive the award and present his paper at ACI in April. Congratulations to Kee!

o   Only one ACI-James award is given each year. Dr. Zhu received this award in 2003 when she studied at UIUC. 

·         March 28 – Kee passed his Ph.D. dissertation defense today.

o   Keee will graduate in May 2011.

o   He has accepted a post-doc position at Rutgers University.

·         April 3 – Kee received ACI-James Instruments Award at ACI, Tampa, FL. http://fsel.engr.utexas.edu/news/2011/kee.cfm

·         April 19 – Paper accepted by Cement and Concrete Research.

o   Zhu, J., Kee, S.H., Han, D. and Tsai, Y-T.,” Effects of Air Voids on Ultrasonic Wave Propagation in Early Age Cement Pastes,” is accepted by Cement and Concrete Research. It was submitted in August 2010.

·         May 25 – Paper accepted by Journal of Sound and Vibration.

o   Kee, S., and Zhu, J. (2011). "Surface wave transmission measurements across distributed surface-breaking cracks using air-coupled sensors." Journal of Sound and Vibration, 330.

·         June 8 and 15 – Outreach activities.

o   Dr. Zhu and Dr. Ghannoum demonstrated concept and experiments of concrete and earthquake to 100 high school students, through the UT COE MITE program.

·         June 27 – Paper accepted by Journal of Acoustical Society of America Express Letter

o   Xiaowei Dai, Jinying Zhu, Michael R. Haberman and Yi-Te Tsai, “Use of parabolic reflector to amplify in-air signals generated during Impact-Echo testing” is accepted by JASA-EL.

o   The JASA-EL paper is published on line. [Link]

·         August – Dr. Jinbiao Cai joined the NDT group as a visiting scholar.

o   Dr. Cai is an associate professor in Civil Engineering Department at Zhejiang University. He will visit UT for one year.

 

 

2010

·         August 20, 2010 – Xiaowei Dai joined the NDT research group.

o   Xiaowei obtained his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Tsinghua University. He will work on the NIST TIP project to develop air-coupled sensing technique for concrete. Welcome Xiaowei.

·         August, 2010 – Paper accepted by IEEE Transaction UFFC.

o   Kee, S.H., Zhu, J., “Effects of Sensor Locations on Surface Wave Transmission Measurements across a Surface-breaking Crack,” submitted in May, and accepted by IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control.

·         May 11, 2010 – Seong-Hoon Kee passed prelim exam.

o   Kee gave a presentation “Air-coupled surface wave transmission measurement for determining crack depth in concrete.” Committee members gave high evaluation to Kee’s work.  Congratulations to Seong-Hoon.

·         April 10, 2010 – Dr. Zhu gave two presentations in structural seminar at UT. 

o   In the first technical presentation, Dr. Zhu described research progress and applications of bender element to cement and concrete materials.

o   The second presentation is about reference management using google scholar and Jabref.

·         March, 2010 – Paper published on JASA.

o   Kee, S.H., Zhu, J., “Using air-coupled sensors to determine the depth of a surface-breaking crack in concrete”, the Journal of Acoustical Society of America, Vol. 127, No.3, March 2010.  [PDF ]

·         January 2010 – Yi-Te Tsai (Ph.D. student) and Ariel Creagh (undergraduate) joined the NDT research group. Welcome Yi-Te and Ariel.

o   Yi-Te Tsai obtained his B.S. degree from National Chiao Tung University (Taiwan), and M.S. degree from Texas A&M University.

2009

·         December  – Dr. Zhu was awarded the UT SRA (Summer Research Assignment) Award for summer 2010 (12/15/09)

o   The UT SRA award will support Dr. Zhu to conduct research on characterizing early age concrete properties using ultrasonic waves.

·         December  Dr. Ting Du joined the NDT group. Welcome!

o   Dr. Du is a visiting scholar from  Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China.
