Angela Lang Matthews (BSCE 2002) has been named the 2013 Young Engineer of the Year by the Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE).
Matthews was honored with the regional award this February by the Preston Trails TSPE chapter. All regional winners were then entered in the state competition, and in June, Matthews was presented the statewide award.
As a project manager for GarzaBury in Austin, Texas, Matthews has more than 11 years of experience in water/wastewater utilities design and water/wastewater systems analysis and master planning. She graduated from the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
“The TSPE award recognition reminded me of the incredible and humbling journey of obstacles and accomplishments throughout my career,” Matthews said. “Every step of the way, dozens of leaders and peers have impacted me and, in many ways, inspired me. I’m proud to be a professional engineer and even more to be honored in my native state of Texas.”
Outside of the office, Matthews regularly leads efforts for local MATHCOUNTS competitions, and she is passionate about mentoring other young engineers, especially women in the industry. Matthews has been with GarzaBury for two years.

Jim Knight, executive vice president in Dallas, called Matthews a true professional. “The world will benefit because Angela chose engineering as her profession,” he said. “She has drive to improve all that is around her and does it in a way that always puts others first."
TSPE established the award in 1970 and receives nominations from chapters across the state. The organization seeks to acknowledge the recipient's technical ability, professional achievements, and civic and humanitarian activities.
Matthews has been a supporter of the Cockrell School's Women in Engineering Program and a Friend of Alec since 2006.
