Bio
Randy Machemehl is the professor and associate chair for academic affairs at the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering.

Machemehl’s research primarily focuses on transportation system operations. The work encompasses automobile, bicycle, and public transportation modes that primarily facilitate trips by people, as well as goods movement modes, particularly trucks. Whether the topic is people or goods movement, he considers the transportation system as a network, so the efforts could be described as actually being based upon networks. Much of his current work explores how to optimize either the network itself or its optimal use. Examples of current optimization problems include the real-time optimization of routes and stops for passenger collection and distribution systems in rail transit, as well as the optimization of freeway incident detection methods.
