GISHydro97 - Prepro

Hydrologic Model Preprocessing Module

Center for Research in Water Resources, The University of Texas at Austin

Introduction

GH-Prepro is a procedure for connecting GIS to external models. The prototype version of GH-Prepro, called HEC-PREPRO was developed by Ferdi Hellweger and David Maidment for the Hydrologic Engineering Center of the US Army Corps of Engineers in Davis, California, as a preprocessor for their new Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS), which will replace the standard HEC-1 model. Additional components have been added by Francisco Olivera and Juling Bao in support of hydrologic modeling for the Texas Department of Transportation.

GH-Prepro takes stream and subbasin GIS data layers and analyzes them to produce a schematic model which defines and spatially connects seven types of hydrologic elements in the landscape: subbasins, reaches, junctions, diversions, reservoirs, sources, sinks. Graphics depicting some Exciting Success Stories illustrate the application of Prepro to basins ranging in size from the drainage basins of the City of Austin, of Texas, of the Upper Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, and of the Niger River in West Africa.

Attention PC CD Users:
The files on the CD are read-only. To run the exercise you will need to copy the files to the hard drive of your computer or another location where you have write permission. When doing so it is best to use the DOS XCOPY command (rather than drag-and-drop in Windows). Using this command will make sure the files are not marked as read-only after you copied them. Follow these steps to copy data from the CD:

  1. Go to DOS.
  2. Go to the CD drive.
  3. Change to the module directory (i.e. terrain, prepro)
  4. Type: xcopy gisfiles destination_path /E
