The Transportation Engineering program at the University of Texas at Austin is constantly busy with activities and events. Whether it is distinguished speakers coming to share their insight with the graduate students or volunteering for Habitat for Humanity or getting together for the monthly ITE Happy Hour, everyone can find things to get involved in outside of the classroom. The main activities and organizations for the department are outlined below.

Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Student Chapter

The Institute of Transportation Engineers is a professional society of more than 15,000 transportation engineers, planners and other professionals.  Its members are responsible for the safe and efficient movement of people and goods on streets, highways, and transit systems. The University of Texas at Austin Student Chapter is one of more than 100 student chapters that provide opportunities for information exchange, participation and networking.

Intelligent Transportation Society (ITS) Student Chapter
The Intelligent Transportation Society of America, better known as ITS America, is a forum in which industry, government, and academia meet to build consensus on fostering, developing, and deploying Intelligent Vehicle-Highway Systems.  UT ITS, The University of Texas Student Chapter is one of the more than 90 student chapters that provide additional opportunities for information exchange, participation, and networking.

Both student groups are organized and operated by graduate and undergraduate students under the supervision of the professors in the transportation department.  The student groups work jointly to organize a wide array of activities and events.  These events include educational, professional, service and outreach, and social activities.

Educational Activities:

  • Transportation Distinguished Lecture Series
  • ITS and ITE Speakers
  • Tours of Transportation Facilities

Professional Activities:

  • Trips to and presentations at local and national professional conferences
  • Resume CD (Distributed at TRB, ITS, and ITE Conferences)

Service and Outreach Activities:

  • Adopt-A-Highway
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Explore UT
  • Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day
  • Spring Engineering Expo

Social Activities:

  • Monthly Birthday Parties
  • New student, perspective student, and intern welcome activities
  • Intramural Sports
