• LABS will start the week of January 27, 2020, and will be held EVERY week (unless mentioned otherwise)
• Lab 1 (week of January 27): Fluid Properties -- a Table of commonly used units in Fluid Mechanics, and the corresponding Lab 1a worksheet
• Lab 2 (week of February 3): Pressure Measurement - Presentation and Worksheet - UT's Pressure in a manometer interactive Java Applet will be demonstrated during the lab. Additional material to be covered:
  • How does a Bourdon gage work?
  • How does a (pressure) strain gage look like? How is it mounted? How does it work?
• Lab 3 - Hydrostatics (week of February 10): Lab 3 Description and Lab 4 worksheet
  • Forces acting on the apparatus used in the lab

• Lab 4 - Flow Visualization Lab (week of February 17): Description >>> Worksheet >>>Example of streamlines, pathlines, and streaklines for unsteady flow
  • Movies on flow visualization:
    • Visualization of flow around cylinder inside UT's flume (wmv file). Neutrally buoyant silver-coated glass particles (of 1/20 of mm diameter each) are dispersed in the water, and can follow the fluid flow. Their trajectories (path-lines) are illuminated through a thin sheet of green light, which is created by a laser (part of UT's Particle Image Velocimetry - PIV - system)
    • Visualization of alternating flow around cylinder inside UT's flume (wmv file). Shows the particles (illuminated through the green thin sheet of laser light) when the water is standing (looks like green sludge!), and after a wave (propagating from left to right of the screen) has been created in the flume (the wave profile is above the cylinder and is NOT shown in the video)

  • Movie of cavitating hydrofoil inside MIT's water tunnel (180 MB .mov file); experiment supervised by S.A. Kinnas and narrated by Cedric Savineau - Check the presentation above for the set-up and the conditions of the experiment.
  • Check this video of this hydrofoil sailboat Hydroptere (similar to the tri-foiler, shown in the presentation above) which has been able to go over 52 knots (about 60 mph) (1 knot=1 nautical mile/h=1.15 mph = 1.85 km/h)- You may see the middle keel of this trifoiler at 3.15 sec of the video. See what happened when it tried to reach 65 mph!
  • The "Ghost", a US navy craft using supercavitation to reduce its resistance and thus travel very fast (more than 50 knots = 57 mph) - The main principle is that if you enclose a moving object inside a vapor or air bubble, that minimizes its contact with the water, and thus its drag significantly! In fact there have been applications of bullet size projectiles (Anti-Torpedo Torpedos!) in water that can exceed the speed of sound in water (5,400 km/h)! See the "Ghost" running!
