Fall 2014 - Latest Field Reconnaissance of Imja Lake in Nepal    

In November 2014, the University of Texas at Austin returned to Nepal to continue the field reconnaissance of dangerous Imja Lake in Nepal.  This time we continued to focus on the evolution (melt rate) of the Imja and Lhotse-Shar glaciers and their impact on the evolution of Imja Lake.

Fall 2013 - Field Reconnaissance of Imja Lake in Nepal    

In September 2013, the University of Texas at Austin returned to Nepal to continue the field reconnaissance of dangerous Imja Lake in Nepal.  This time we focused on the evolution (melt rate) of the Imja and Lhotse-Shar glaciers and their impact on the evolution of Imja Lake.  We conducted GPR surveys and measured the temperature in the debris cover of the glaciers.   We also presented results or our work to the Khumbu Alpine Conservation Council in Dingboche.  We were joined by Ulyana Horodyskyj from the University of Colorado who is studying the nearby Ngozumpa glacier.

Fall 2012 - High Mountain Glacial Watershed Program Completes Latest Field Reconnaissance of Imja Lake in Nepal    

Following on the May 2012 Expedition to the Hinku Valley and Imja Lake, the High Mountain Glacial Watershed Program returned to Nepal this fall to continue field reconnaissance of potentially dangerous lakes in Nepal, conducting field surveys and meetings with local community leaders regarding the threat posed by Imja Lake in the Imja Khola Valley.  We were in the field from September 12 to October 5, 2012 investigating Imja Lake, taking ground penetrating radar and lake bathymetry data, and working with community members.

Spring 2012 - High Mountain Glacial Watershed Program Completes New Field Reconnaissance of Potentially Dangerous Glacial Lakes in Nepal    

Following on the September 2011 Andean-Asian Glacial Lake Expedition to Imja Lake, the High Mountain Glacial Watershed Program returned to Nepal this spring to complete their field reconnaissance of potentially dangerous lakes in Nepal (Thulagi Lake near Anapurna, Tam Pokhari and Dudh Pokhari Lakes in the Hinku Valley) and to conduct field surveys and meetings with local community leaders regarding the threat posed by Imja Lake in the Imja Khola Valley.    We were in the field from May 3 to June 1, 2012 investigating these lakes, taking geohpysical data, and working with community members.
