To create and visualize a standing wave go to the "Multi-component Waves" applet and set the heights and periods of Waves 1 and 2 equal to each other, and the height of Wave 3 equal to zero. Then make Wave 2 propagate in the opposite direction than that of Wave 1 (by clicking on the small yellow square on the left side of the wave). The standing wave can be seen at the bottom of the screen (Compound Wave).
